About

Dr. Carolyn Clarke

Dr. Carolyn Clarke is a licensed psychologist in the state of California (PSY# 34816). She has had an interest in mental health and wellness for over 20 years. Her career started with teaching yoga and mindfulness to children and adults, and she published the award-winning Imaginations book series on guided meditation for children. As she became more interested in meditation and the mind, Dr. Clarke decided to pursue a career as a psychologist.

Dr. Clarke completed her masters and doctoral training at the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University. She explored the topics of mindfulness, self-compassion, and stress for her dissertation, and she maintained a strong interest in mindfulness and self-compassion in her various clinical training settings.

Dr. Clarke has received intensive training in eating disorders at the UCSD Center for Healthy Eating and Activity Research (CHEAR), treating a wide range of eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, and disordered eating). She also realized her love for working with college students at the University of San Diego (USD) College Counseling Center, where she focused on stress management and anxiety during her training. She also received training in family and couples counseling at the Alliant Couple and Family Clinic.

In her last year of studies, Dr. Clarke completed an APA-accredited doctoral internship in Health Service Psychology at the University of San Francisco Counseling and Psychological Services (USF-CAPS). Here she provided multicultural integrative therapy to students for a variety of mental health needs, including stress, depression, anxiety, disordered eating, identity issues, and relationship issues.

Dr. Clarke completed a postdoctoral training providing individual and DBT group therapy at Julie Trim PhD & Associates, a private practice focusing on eating disorders, trauma, and emotion dysregulation. Dr. Clarke also completed a postdoctoral training in health psychology and eating disorders at Sustain Change, a private practice led by Dr. Liana Abascal.

Dr. Clarke’s various clinical experiences led to her integrative approach to therapy using self-compassion, mindfulness, and behavioral evidence-based practices like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). She believes in meeting clients where they are at with compassion, kindness, and a sense of humor to help them meet their therapy goals, gain insight, and increase self-compassion.

When she isn’t meeting with clients, you can probably find Dr. Clarke at the beach soaking up the San Diego sunshine with family. She enjoys yoga, meditation, cooking new recipes, reading a good book, and learning how to watercolor paint.
